Former High Court Judge Justice Moses Hungwe Chinhengo has died.
He died in Masvingo yesterday. He was 69.
The cause of death is not yet known.
Judicial Service Commission spokesperson Mr Daniel Nemukuyu confirmed the ex-judge’s death.
He said the JSC, led by Chief Justice Luke Malaba, is saddened by the former judge’s death.
“The Chief Justice of Zimbabwe and Chairperson of the JSC, Honourable Justice Luke Malaba, the Judicial Service Commissioners, the Judge President of the High Court, judges and magistrates, the secretary of JSC and members of the Judicial Service, would like to express their deepest condolences to the Chinhengo family on the death of former High Court Judge, Honourable Justice Moses Hungwe Chinhengo in Masvingo today, September 19, 2025 (yesterday),” said Mr Nemukuyu in a statement.
Justice Chinhengo joined the High Court bench in February 2004.
He later served as a High Court judge in Botswana and an acting Judge of Appeal in Lesotho. Subsequently, he was appointed Acting Judge of the High Court of Namibia. Justice Chinhengo studied law at the University of Zimbabwe and graduated in 1978.
At independence, he was appointed under secretary at the Ministry of Justice and Foreign Affairs, serving until 1982 whereupon in 1983 he was appointed head of the department of Parliamentary Affairs as well as the Justice Department.
Before his appointment as High Court judge of Zimbabwe, Justice Chinhengo practiced as a legal officer in the Ministry of Justice, and worked as a legal practitioner and corporate executive.
Mr Nemukuyu said mourners are gathered at Chinhengo Farm in the Nyaningwe area of Masvingo.
Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
