A FORMER employee at Udine Products in Bulawayo has appeared in court for allegedly robbing the company of more than $1 000 after he claimed that he wanted to refund a customer.

The accused, Tofara Shumbanhe (32) appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Ms Gladmore Mushove facing a charge of theft last week.

He was remanded to tomorrow for continuation of trial.

The company was represented by Mr Jabulani Sibanda (54) who is employed as the loss control manager.

The court heard that on 23 March 2017 at around 2pm, Mr Vitalis Matunhure went to buy bricks at the company and Nesta Mareke who is at large was the sales lady on the day in question.

She informed Mr Matunhure that they wanted to refund another customer Ms Nolwazi Donga cash who had cancelled the order.

They wanted to use the money that Mr Matunhure intended to buy bricks with.

The court heard that Mr Matunhure handed over the $1 350 cash to Shumbanhe who was on the dispatch department and he assured him that he will get his bricks using Ms Donga’s invoice serial number INA73997.

Shumbanhle and Mareke allegedly took the money and converted it to their own use.

The matter came to light when Ms Donga went to the company to collect her bricks that she was paying for in instalments which was given to Matunhure and were not receipted.

In a statement, Mr Matunhure said the accused asked him to use Ms Donga’s receipt to get his bricks.

“The accused person then went on to tell me that he was the one who knows the customer whom they wanted to refund and they assured me that I would get bricks even if I was going to use someone else receipt.

After three months I was approached by Udine representatives and they asked me how I purchased the bricks from the company and I told them what had happened,” he said.
