YOU probably have heard about Konka Soweto, the exclusive restaurant and nightclub described as the “millionaire’s playground,” in the heart of Pimville.
It was established after the refurbishment of Icon Soweto and, since opening its doors, the club has seen many of South Africa’s leading celebrities partying at the joint.
And, it has also become the joint of choice for some of Mzansi’s top artists with amapiano superstars – Focalistic, DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small – having performed there.
“In short, if you are anyone who is anyone in Johannesburg, you have probably heard about Konka,” thundered the southafrican website.
“From what Twitter users have said about Konka, it seems a good spot does not come cheap and you might have to dig deep into your pockets for a seat at a Konka table.
This is what a close source had to say about the club: “It’s ghetto fabulous. Ghetto because of the location, fabulous because of the experience. People deem it as expensive but in reality, it’s different from other local establishments.
“They provide security, aesthetic and interpersonal service. In essence you are paying for luxury in Soweto. It’s always worth it.”
It’s a concept, and experience, which bowled out one ambitious Zimbabwean entrepreneur, after a visit to the Soweto joint.
After months of working on the huge project, which meant an entire renovation of a building and converting it into an upmarket joint, Harare’s Konke, not Konja, swings its doors open on Saturday.
A number of the capital’s A-Team deejays, including J Boss and SD, are set to entertain fans at the joint.
The owners say this will just be a taste of what patrons should expect at the joint, which has been converted into quite an exclusive place, with VIP and VVIP Sections.
Konke is located at number 18848, along Robert Mugabe, opposite Pan Jap Motors, in Eastlea.
It boasts of outdoor and indoor facilities and the owners say the game plan is to bring the best quality of entertainment for their patrons.
Speaking to H-Metro, Konke communications officer, Memory Shumba, said: “Konke is an upmarket restaurant with an objective to provide a relaxing and, at the same time, entertaining environment.
“ As much as we are in the city, we want our patrons to be taken back to their roots, through our traditional meals, which are prepared by renowned chefs.
“We also have some of the top Harare deejays, giving us entertainment, on the day and during our weekends.”
The restaurant specialises in traditional cuisine while it also serves the western menu.
“The priority is on healthy food.”
