From Paul Mundandi in Zvishavane

“We made some silly mistakes on that day with my goalkeeper Twaliki (Victor) scooping the ball into the nets and my defender Smart (Muchabaya) beating his keeper with a header. It was a flashing header that can contest to be the best goal of the season but gifting Dynamos with such goals there was no chance of us to come back. The nearest Dynamos striker was about ten metres away from him,” he said.

The defeat was not received with good news by Highlanders as they thought Shabanie would beat Dynamos at Rufaro. The asbestos miners were accused by rival fans of helping Dynamos’ cause simply because Masomere is known to be a Dynamos fan.

The outspoken gaffer has however laughed it off saying fans had their own opinions.
“I have been a Dynamos fan long before I went into coaching. Some football administrators love Dynamos and my former employer Delma (Lupepe) was a Highlanders life member despite coming up with the Amazulu project. He nearly fired me when I publicly said I was a Dynamos fan in 2003 on the programme This is Football and it was Felix (Matsika) who intervened and I went all the way to win the championship,” said Masomere.

“I lost to Bosso home and away and I managed to hold Dynamos at Maglas and when I lost to them in their own backyard it is now an issue. I work for Shabanie Mine Football club and it’s not the coaches of some clubs who tell me kuti hwina game iri, dyiwa iri etc. I am not paid by the Dynamos treasurer nor by Mubaiwa (Kenny), the Dynamos chairman. I am one of the oldest coaches in the country and I do not work under Pasuwa (Callisto).”

“When Dynamos wins it is his CV which improves not mine and people should know that he is my young boy and I am not his young boy. There is no law in Zimbabwe that says I must lose to

Highlanders and beat Dynamos. Sei pandakadyiwa neHighlanders vasina kutaurisa and iko zvino nekuti yava Dynamos then it becomes an issue, why? Dynamos and Highlanders have better players by far compared to Shabanie Mine FC and still I am expected to perform miracles and beat the two big teams,” said Masomere.

Shabanie’s defeat was not welcomed by many title contenders.

“If you go to Mandava some Shabanie Mine fans will be supporting the visiting team that will be playing against FC Platinum. It’s common with fans and why then should one cry if Dynmos fans rally behind Monoz when they are playing Highlanders? Does it have to be an issue because some coaches are now saying people are teaming up to go against Highlanders?”

Masomere last season managed to save Shabanie Mine from relegation by a whisker. He started the season on a high note and is hoping to finish in the top four.
The club has average players who rely on teamwork.

However it was going to be a tall order for Shabanie to beat Dynamos in Harare, a feat they only managed to do in 2001 when they beat the biggest supported team with a goal from the late Thomas “Chaurura” Makwasha in the BP Cup final. The pony-haired Makwasha beat Gift Muzadzi in a match which in Callisto (now the Dynamos coach) featured and Moses “Bambo” Chunga was the head coach.

It has been 12 years since the infamous victory and blaming Masomere for failing to beat resurgent Dynamos after a number of coaches had tried and failed will be like blaming Rahman Gumbo for the failure by the Warriors to qualify for the World Cup, a feat which Zimbabwe is yet to achieve. It still remains a dream for both Zvishavane teams to beat Dynamos in Harare.
