FROM patrolling prison corridors to managing a business empire that employs over 250 people, Mr Henry Machingura’s rise from a Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) officer to a celebrated entrepreneur exemplifies the power of discipline, resilience, and hard work.

Last week, Mr Machingura celebrated 15 years in business during a colourful event in Gweru. The celebration was graced by prominent figures, including ZPCS Commissioner-General Dr Moses Chihobvu and Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Owen Ncube, who commended his achievements.

Mr Machingura’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2009 with a small tuck shop in Nkayi, Matabeleland North Province. What started as a modest venture quickly grew, generating revenue that paved the way for diversified business interests.

Today, his enterprise, Machingura Investments, spans grocery wholesale shops under the Blue Roof brand in six districts across Zimbabwe, gold and chrome mining, transport and logistics, earth-moving equipment services, a maize milling plant and tourism investments.

Addressing guests at the anniversary event, Mr Machingura credited his ZPCS training for laying the foundation for his success.

“The training I received from ZPCS instilled bravery, hard work and discipline. I’m grateful to Commissioner-General Dr Moses Chihobvu for equipping me with these values and for allowing Machingura Investments to collaborate with ZPCS on various projects,” he said.

“Machingura Investments started as a small tuckshop in Nkayi and it expanded within the district and beyond and this expansion led to the establishment of shops in Nkayi, Silobela, Gweru, Lupane, Kwekwe and Gokwe.”

Mr Machingura said they later diversified into gold and chrome mining in line with President Mnangagwa’s philosophy, Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabaninilo.

One of these partnerships includes the development of the Chikurubi Dam View Resort in Harare.

“In pursuit of diversification, we have heeded the Government’s call for private-public partnership partnering with ZPCS to build Chikurubi Dam view resort in Harare,” said Mr Machingura.

Mr Machingura’s journey has not been without hurdles. Reflecting on the past 15 years, he admitted that success came with its fair share of failures.

“It hasn’t been a bed of roses. We’ve failed more times than we’ve succeeded, closing 24 outlets along the way. But these challenges have given us invaluable experience. We have adapted to market changes, embraced innovation, and leveraged technology to remain competitive,” he said.

Machingura Investments is deeply rooted in community development. Notable corporate social responsibility initiatives include constructing a classroom block at Chironde Secondary School and providing scholarships to disadvantaged learners.

Minister Owen Ncube lauded Machingura Investments for its transformative journey from a small enterprise to a key player in Zimbabwe’s retail sector.

“The retail sector contributes significantly to the Midlands Provincial GDP, alongside mining, agriculture, and manufacturing. Machingura Investments embodies the spirit of indigenous entrepreneurship, promoting affordable commodity access while sourcing over 80 percent of its merchandise locally. This aligns with the national ethos of self-sufficiency and economic empowerment,” he said.

The minister also praised the company for exemplifying business confidence in the Second Republic’s strategic policy reforms, which aim to foster private sector-led modernisation and industrialisation as Zimbabwe works toward achieving an upper-middle-income society ahead of 2030.
