adminGwabi was found guilty on June 28, 2011 and was pronounced not suitable for community service and he escaped. He was, however, re-arrested this year and brought to court before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabini. Mr Jarabini sentenced him to two years in prison but set aside eight months on condition of good behaviour.
In sentencing him, Mr Jarabini took into account that cases of such a nature were on the increase and that the courts had to send the correct message to would-be offenders.
Agreed facts were that on June 24, 2011 and at around 9:30am, Gwabi met the teenager coming out of the VID Chitungwiza depot after failing a provisional driving licence test.
He introduced himself as a VID official and promised him that he could process him a learner’s licence for a fee.
Gwabi lured the boy and asked for US$60 and after an hour, he asked the boy to come to Unit A and handed him a fake provisional driver’s licence.
When the boy noted that the licence was counterfeit, he reported the matter to a detective Sergeant Sakala who later hatched a plan to apprehended him.
After the arrest, he submitted his particulars to the police as Normwell Solomon and that he was born in April 1979, instead of 1974.
