Fungisai said she conceived the idea of performing at the prison as part of efforts to promote her latest album “Wenyasha Ndewenyasha,” which will be launched on the same day.
“I have always visited the prison, I think I have a soft spot for the girl child. Since we are in the month of giving, this is a way to give back to the community,” said Fungisai.
The musician is also planning to donate groceries to the prison on the same day.
Fungisai, together with Friends for the Environment, will plant 200 tress at Chikurubi Prison as part of celebrating Tree Planting Day.
Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Francis Nhema will also grace the occasion.
In the evening on the same day, Fungisai will launch her album at Garwe Restaurant in Harare.
Apart from gospel tracks, she is renowned for, Fungisai has also penned other songs which touch on different issues.
On the forthcoming album, the first song focuses on domestic tourism.
“The song creates awareness for local tourists that it is not only international tourists who can boost our economy. Domestic tourists have not been celebrated of late — that is why I put it into song,” said the diva.
There is also a song which talks about HIV and Aids.
“The song is based on the UNAids theme which is “Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination, Zero Aids related deaths”. It urges Zimbabweans to believe that as a nation we can do it and have an HIV-free generation,” she said
She also features Blessing Shumba on the song “Ndinotendeuka Ndiregerewo”.
Fungisai has captured the national consciousness since bursting onto the scene as a 19-year-old gospel novice under the wing of veteran singer, Elias Musakwa.
She has not looked back and “Wenyasha Ndewenyasha” is her ninth album in a career that spans more than a decade.
