Gallery curator pleased with Art Attack

The workshop was part of the Khula Udweba initiative and runs twice between April and August each year. It is earmarked for children of school-going age during the holidays and seeks to expose and nurture their artistic talent.

Zulu said the workshop, which was held over five days from 5 August culminating in the closing exhibit of the children’s works on 10 August, was an undoubted success.

“The event was a success as the children managed to showcase their artistic side and this was especially evident on our final exhibit of the children’s works which took place on 10 August. Our Regional Director Voti Thebe presided over the ceremony,” said Zulu.

He said during the closing ceremony, the art gallery reaffirmed its status as a place for developing and nurturing young artistic talent in Bulawayo.

“Mr Thebe reiterated the gallery’s commitment to developing young artistic talent in the city while also thanking parents for allowing children the opportunity to express themselves creatively,” said Zulu.

The gallery received complaints from schools in the city that also wanted to have their students participate in the event.

“We received numerous complaints from schools who felt that they had been excluded from the event and I think that was due to the lack of advertising on our part,” he said.

The assistant curator said the gallery planned on making the event more inclusive in the future which would also result in the categorisation of the different age groups of the children taking part.

“We will try to include as many children as possible in future and we will also group the children in categories because this year we had a situation where we had some children who are four years old exhibiting with those that are 16,” said Zulu.

He said the gallery was looking forward to having an exhibition showcasing the children’s works from the workshops in April and August.

A total of 30 children, two of them on holiday from the United States and the United Kingdom, were presented with certificates of participation during the closing ceremony.
