THE National Art Gallery in Bulawayo has opened a month long exhibition that will see different art pieces from local artistes showcased.
This is the second edition of the Independence Art Exhibition at the Gallery.
In an interview, the assistant gallery curator Clifford Zulu said the second annual Independence Exhibition which was opened on Thursday last week will run up until end of May under the theme Memorialisation.
“The theme of our exhibition is Memorialisation. We are in memory of our independence as Zimbabweans. The Gallery is therefore engaging the nation to revive the spirit of Ubuntu/unhu, by celebrating our cultural diversity and shared history, further enriching the nation’s cultural heritage and tangible visual culture,” said Zulu.
Zulu, who is also the curator of the exhibition said the exhibition, aims to bring out social developments, environmental surroundings and cultural inheritance through visual art pieces.
“We want to be seen as a contemporary guide for creative memory of our Independence Day celebrations. We want to be the root and growth driving to preserve cultural archives of the country’s creative activities in the post-independence Zimbabwe, over the passage of time,” he said.
Zulu added that ten local artistes are showcasing in this exhibition with 30 pieces so far being on display.
“Artistes are showcasing a wide range of genres of art and design that include painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, video, performance, design and craft. Artistes that are exhibiting include Neville Starling, Janet Johnston and Dumisani Ndlovu among others,” he said.
Zulu said this year’s exhibition was different from last year as they have brought new and upcoming artistes in a bid to spice up the event.
Meanwhile, the Independence exhibition is running along Pachipamwe and Thekwane Art exhibitions.
