Gandawa Takes the Swing as New ZGA President

BLESSING Gandawa of Ruwa Country Club is the new man at the helm of Zimbabwean golf.

He was elected president of the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) after a marathon elective Annual General Meeting held at Royal Harare Golf Club, replacing Martin Chikwana of Bulawayo Province, whose four year tenure comes to an end.

Gandawa, the outgoing Harare Province Golf Union president, will lead the new executive for the next two years. He now inherits the reins from Chikwana, who also served as a vice president of the African Golf Federation during his term.

“I am honoured to take on this responsibility, and I hope we can continue building on the solid foundation laid by the previous executive,” said Gandawa shortly after the election.

Roland Park Golf Club’s Saline Masiya, from the Midlands Province, was elected first vice president, succeeding Dr Mukondo while Triangle and Hippo Valley player Patrick Mangwiro, takes up the role of second vice president.

The leadership trio was unanimously chosen by representatives from all five provincial golf unions, Matabeleland, Midlands, Harare, Masvingo and Mutare. The AGM stretched over eight hours, a clear indication of the high stakes and passion in the room.

A new marketing officer will soon be appointed to replace Ephraim Mashingaidze, who served in the outgoing executive.

Elton Zulu is the new Secretary General, with Clayton Kazembe retaining his position as treasurer. Tirivashe Nheweyembwa also stays on as the association’s administrator.

Meanwhile, seasoned professional Davidson Elijah, was part of the action at the Sunshine Tour’s Luanda Seniors Open in Uganda over the weekend.

The 54-year-old businessman from Mashava, who has remained active on the senior circuit, featured in what is considered one of the most lucrative events for golfers aged 50 and above.
