Gangsters inspired Heavy K hit song

GANGSTERS inspired South Africa’s DJ Heavy K in coming up with the hit-track Gun Song, a song he describes as the bedrock of his drum-influenced sound.

With hits such as Wena, Sweetie, Lento, Izizwe (remix), Teka Teka, Beautiful War and Easy to Love, Heavy K, real name Mkhululi Siqula, has come up with an identifiable sound that has earned him the name Drumboss.

The 24-year-old DJ who grew up in the Veelplas neighbourhood in Port Elizabeth and was in Bulawayo for a show at Club Eden over the weekend said Gun Song was inspired by a dream.

“The Gun Song was inspired by gangsters. Sometime in 2012, I fell asleep while waiting for my manager to transport me to a gig. I dreamt of gunshots and when I woke up, I went to my computer and searched for gunshot sound samples. Once I found them, I immediately started producing a song which is unique because of the gun shots. It took me under 25 minutes to produce,” said Heavy K.

“When my manager finally arrived, the song was complete, ready to be sampled. He couldn’t believe I’d produced it in such a short period of time. He liked it and said it would change my life, and it did.”

And like his manager predicted, the song was well received and still receives a lot of airplay from different nightspots.

“The first time I played the track at Diamondz in Port Elizabeth (PE), everyone went crazy. PE has gangsters who kept demanding that I repeat the song the first time I played it. They had their guns pointed at me while others shot in the air in the club. I repeated the song about eight times,” said Heavy K.

Gun Shot was a turning point for the DJ’s career as he now had a sound unique to him, different from his former group Point 5.
