HARARE City Council has recorded 947 licensed traders operating in the central business district (CBD), Acting Town Clerk Advocate Warren Chiwawa has said.
This comes as the local authority intensifies efforts to bring order to the capital’s streets and ensure traders operate from designated spaces.
According to the council database presented by Adv Chiwawa, the Fourth Street Rank has the highest number of licensed traders at 224, comprising 143 beverage traders, 45 trinket sellers, 24 market traders and 12 fruit and vegetable vendors.
Copa Cabana has 200 traders, including 113 beverage sellers, 35 trinket traders, 32 market traders and 20 fruit and vegetable vendors.
Charge Office has 58 licensed traders, while Market Square Rank has 105.
Rezende Street Rank has 26 traders, while other trading points include Square with 20 flower sellers, VID with 12 arts and craft traders, Julius and Kenneth Kaunda with 60 flea-market traders, Charter and Lane Street with eight stationery traders, Chinhoyi and Samora with 30 market traders and Chinhoyi and Speke with 204 market traders.
Adv Chiwawa said the database was important in helping council establish the number and location of traders operating legally in the CBD.
The figures come amid Government and council efforts to clear illegal vending and restore order in the capital, with authorities insisting that informal traders should operate from designated trading areas.
