Gas explosion kills Goromonzi woman

A 21-YEAR-OLD Goromonzi woman was burnt beyond recognition following a gas tank explosion which occurred in a shop at Bothersrust Business Centre in Goromonzi on Tuesday.

Gloria Marozva was in the company of four other people when tragedy struck.

Police spokesperson for Mashonaland East, Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi, confirmed the tragedy.

“At around 5pm, nearby residents heard a loud sound from the shop and Simon Mamhundu (39) proceeded to the shop to investigate. Upon arrival, he noticed that the whole shop was engulfed by fire,” she said.

“He rushed inside and rescued Sibongile Kim Nyanyisa (2), who was trapped inside. He also noticed that one Fungai Maruta, Natty Amis and Tatenda Chikwana as well as Sibongile Kim Nyanyisa had burns on their bodies.

“Mamhundu and other residents teamed up and extinguished the fire and in the process, they discovered that Gloria Marozva was trapped in the shop and burnt beyond recognition. The incident was immediately reported to the police.”

Insp Chazovachiyi said everything in the shop was destroyed. He urged the public to always seek the expertise of trained people to do gas connections and always ensure that gas tanks were kept outside buildings where there was free movement of air.
