Gay rights ain’t our top priority

chatting with the bubble above the tissue roll cynically asking, ‘‘so you think you have the worst job in the world?”
To that cartoon one may as well add Luke Tamborinyoka’s face, again with the cynical legend, ‘‘so you think you have the worst job in the world?”

Luke Tamborinyoka is the spokesperson to Morgan Tsvangirai, the MDC-T leader with a penchant for shoving his feet in his mouth.
This past week, Tsvangirai stirred a hornet’s nest when he told the BBC’s Newsnight programme that he wanted to see homosexuality enshrined in the country’s new constitution.
“It (homosexuality) a very controversial subject in my part of the world. My attitude is that I hope the constitution will come out with freedom of sexual orientation, for as long as it does not interfere with anybody,” Tsvangirai told Newsnight’s Gavin Esler.

And people are naturally up in arms.
For the record while homosexuality is illegal in Zimbabwe, homosexuals are not being hunted down or killed in Zimbabwe. They have their Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe in Belvedere.
There are even some clubs that are known to be homosexual haunts and as long as they keep their unnatural acts behind closed doors, no one minds them.

This is why its amazing that while gays and lesbians are free to do what they want away from the public eye, Tsvangirai thought their cause was compelling enough to be enshrined in national law.
Our whole Prime Minister, on a visit to a country that imposed sanctions on us after we asserted our rights to our economic resources, did not see the need to talk about our economic rights.
He skirted the illegal economic sanctions that have bogged down our people as he felt gay rights were more important than the economic rights of 13 million black Zimbabweans.

Yet the Bible is quite clear on so-called gay rights. The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of homosexuality.
Despite having been in existence for well over a decade here, GALZ has been unable to persuade Zimbabweans that homosexuality is good for us, they have resorted – through their godfathers in the

West – to attacking anyone who speaks against them as happened in Malawi. In so doing the gay thought police have exposed themselves for what they really are – bullies who threaten and intimidate those who dare to speak out against them.

We must ask who the real bigots are here. In Zimbabwe, speaking one’s mind is a constitutionally protected right. The real bigots are those who label anyone who disagrees with them as bigoted and intolerant and attack them for not sharing their beliefs.

Our society has the responsibility and the right to discourage the practice of homosexuality. The Judeo-Christian teaching on this is clear. Homosexuality is a deviance from God’s norm. It is neither normal nor healthy behaviour.

Lest anyone think that this theological position is merely sectarian, it is important to note that even the renowned theologian Wolfhart Pannenberg concluded that when the church has “ceased to treat homosexual activity as a departure from the biblical norm” it “would no longer stand on biblical ground but against the unequivocal witness of Scripture” and “would thereby have ceased to be one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.”

Furthermore, any attempt to equate homosexuality with race or ethnicity should offend all of us. There is no evidence that homosexuality is an inborn trait, in spite of numerous efforts to prove the contrary.

Homosexuality has many contributing causes, but it is obviously not to be equated with race or ethnicity.
A person’s ethnicity is what one is, whereas homosexual behaviour is what one does.

As Christians, we will continue to support politicians who speak out against homosexuality and to oppose those who support special rights for homosexuals and who seek to support societal approval of homosexual behaviour. I applaud President Mugabe for his principled stand against homosexuality.

I hope other politicians, notably Mr Tsvangirai, will be emboldened by President Mugabe’s stand against such unnatural acts.
It was in London that President Mugabe likened homosexual behaviour to behaviour worse than that of dogs and pigs.

It was in France that he repeated it and his bodyguards floored notorious British homosexual, Peter Tatchel after he tried to confront President Mugabe over his anti-gay stance.
This is what real leaders do, they stand firm on principle, and since leaders are anointed by God, I don’t see God anointing Tsvangirai and his pro-gay stance.
