ZIMBABWE senior netball got off to a slow start in their international friendlies against Malawi yesterday, falling to the regional giants 40-54.

The two nations are playing a series which will see them clashing three times in as many days.

Their male counterparts will also be in action and will play an equal number of games.

However, the Gems development side, Zambezi Eagles will not get independent game time as they have been absorbed into the senior side to allow for the visitors to get enough rest in between their games.

Speaking at the official opening of the series, guest of honour and Sports and Recreation Commission chair-man  Nathaniel Madzivanyika heaped praises on Zimbabwe Netball Association for hosting the important games.

“We are truly delighted to host this international friendly tournament here in Zimbabwe, showing our commitment to netball development not only in Zimbabwe and Malawi but across the region,” Madzivanyika said.

“Malawi stands among the top three netball nations in Africa, and their consistent performance on the global stage has earned them admiration and respect across the continent.

“Having the opportunity to play against such a formidable team is not only an honour for us, but also an invaluable opportunity for our national side.”

The SRC boss added that friendly games present a key platform for the Gems and their male counterparts to sharpen their skills, gain exposure and measure themselves against one of Africa’s best.

Malawi are currently eighth on the World Netball Rankings while Zimbabwe are 13th.

With the aim of building for the future and to make it to the 2027 Netball World Cup, ZINA have been ensuring their teams get enough international exposure.

Last month, they hosted Kenya in a four-day-test series in which the Gems won all their matches.

“Last month’s friendly encounters against Kenya provided our players with a strong test of character and team-work, and this match with Malawi continues that positive momentum,” he said.

“These engagements are key to strengthening our game, improving competitiveness, and ensuring that our teams remain prepared for the challenges that lie ahead on the international stage.

“As the Sports and Recreation Commission, we believe that sport plays a vital role in uniting communities, promoting healthy lifestyles, and showcasing our national pride.

“Supporting our national teams is more than just cheering from the side-lines, it is an investment in our youth, our identity, and our collective future.”

The Gems will also use these friendly games to prepare for their outing in the Celtic Cup in Scotland next month where they will be playing for World Netball rankings.

This afternoon, the Gems and Golden Flyers will once again take to the court with the men and women Malawian sides.
