adminACCRA. – GHANA’S Finance Minister, Seth Terkper, said the ongoing pilot audit into the payroll system could save the country up to US$120 million government was losing to ghost staff.
He said thus a pilot payroll audit that is currently ongoing in Greater Accra region would be expanded.
A pilot payroll audit is being carried out in conjunction with the internal audit agency in the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra region to validate staff strength and to determine whether adequate controls existed over the management and control of the payroll.
Records revealed that about 40 teachers on Government of Ghana payroll were neither sighted during a headcount nor on the nominal payroll of their management units.
“We have taken action to block the salaries of [the] 40 teachers, whilst measures are being taken to expand the audit to cover other districts and also recover illegal payments,” said Tekper.
He said the country could save up to $ 120 million 400 million Cedi could be saved if effective measures were implemented to deal with the challenge. He estimated about 3 000 ghost staff drew salaries from government. – CAJ News.
