A TWO-YEAR-OLD girl drowned in a fish pond at Hamudikuwanda Village under Chief Mutasa area in Nyanga.

The incident happened on November 9 around 11am.

Acting Manicaland Provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, said Sabina Matasva was playing with other children near her home. Her mother, Sharon Sahombe (20), left and went to wash clothes at a nearby stream. During her absence, Sabina and three-year-old Zebedia Matasva attempted to follow her.

“Tragically, Sabina stumbled and fell into a fish pond approximately 65 cm deep and drowned.

“Zebedia screamed for help, alerting Abisha Matasva (42), who rushed to the scene and retrieved the child’s body.

“Police officers from Ruda attended the scene and the body was taken to Hauna District Hospital Mortuary awaiting post-mortem,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

Asst Insp Chinyoka urged parents to be vigilant. “We urge all parents and guardians to closely monitor their children at all times, especially near water bodies. “A moment of inattention can lead to irreversible tragedy.”
