GIRLS’ schools came up top in the Bulawayo provincial finals of the National High Schools Quiz Tournament held at Gifford High School recently with Townsend and Montrose taking first and second place respectively. Sikhulile High School wrapped up the top three, beating giants Eveline High School, hosts Gifford High School and Hamilton. For winning the provincial finals, Townsend girls went back to school with a trophy and prize money of $100 while Montrose were awarded a shield and $75. Sikhulile were also given a shield and a $50 prize.

The three winning schools automatically entered the national finals taking place at Prince Edward High School in Harare in August.

They will compete against 27 schools including George Silundika (Matabeleland North), Mtshabezi High School (Matabeleland South), Fletcher High School (Midlands), Kutama College (Mashonaland West), St Faith High School (Manicaland), Gokomere High School (Masvingo), St Ignatius College (Mashonaland East) and St John’s Emerald Hill (Harare).

Now in its third year, the national tournament is organised by the Book of African Records in partnership with Old Mutual Foundation to educate pupils about their country and the world.

“The purpose of the quiz competition is to educate pupils about important people and issues in the country and around the world. We want school children to enhance their knowledge,” schools tournament provincial coordinator, Steven Muzawazi said.

He said the competition was open to all high school pupils, regardless of age.

“Anyone can participate; it’s not about how old you’re. It’s about how much knowledge you’ve got. Montrose High School four-member team had three Form Two girls and one upper six but they beat some teams that had upper six pupils,” said Muzawazi.
