Corporate Stationers has partnered with the GMB and is now supplying and distributing food hampers from their depots around the country.
The beneficiaries of the scheme are mostly school teachers.
Some of the teachers in most districts have already started receiving the hampers comprising 20kg rice, 20 litres cooking oil, 5kg sugar, 5kg sugar beans and 24 bars of laundry soap.
The recipients are located at schools in Manicaland, Midlands, Masvingo, Matabeleland and Mashonaland provinces.
Launched almost six months ago, the scheme aims to assist teachers and other civil servants who are mostly in remote areas of Zimbabwe.
The beneficiaries will no longer have to travel long distances to urban centres in search of basic food commodities, a company spokesperson said.
Over the last holiday, a number of teachers who joined the scheme were notified of the availability of the food hampers and received them at their nearest GMB depots.
Currently, all GMB depots are distributing the food items to teachers and other recipients.
Under the scheme, the Salary Service Bureau approves members that are interested to join.
The members contribute US$10 per month in return for a wide range of basic goods over a 12-month “hire purchase” agreement.
The project co-ordinator, Mr Noble Gapare, said the agreement with GMB and the SSB will ensure that the food products are always available for the deserving members.
“We want to improve our relations with the members and the suppliers so that we can avoid any glitches during distribution.
“We don’t want our members to continue suffering as they did previously because the resources were limited due to lack of employer guarantees,” said Mr Gapare.
The Public Service Commission and the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture have supported the scheme saying teachers and other public servants need to be cushioned against their low salaries.
Meanwhile, Corporate Stationers has entered into a service agreement with Zimpost whereby all aspiring members to the scheme can access the membership form from all post offices around the country.
This will enable the civil servants to fill in the forms before sending them directly to the SSB free of charge.
