HIGHLANDERS and Dynamos ensured the country’s traditional football giants remained firmly in the spotlight on a goal-filled Sunday in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, with Bosso being held to a 1-1 draw by defending champions Simba Bhora at Barbourfields Stadium while DeMbare produced a ruthless display to dispatch Agama.
Yet, despite the contrasting fortunes of the two football powerhouses, it was the breathtaking six-goal thriller between Hardrock and CAPS United that stole the headlines on Matchday 21.
Reports from Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe indicate that Hardrock and CAPS United served up a pulsating 3-3 draw in what was arguably one of the most entertaining matches of the season. The two sides traded blows in a contest packed with attacking football, defensive drama and momentum swings. New CAPS United goalkeeper
Washington Arubi endured a difficult debut, conceding three goals. Washington Navaya found the net for Hardrock before substitute Wilfred Madzungu came off the bench to score a quickfire brace in the second half. CAPS United scored through Kudzai Chigwida, Obriel Chirinda and Chris Mugalu in a match that kept supporters on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
At Rufaro Stadium, Veronica Gwaze witnessed Dynamos rediscover their scoring touch with a convincing 4-0 demolition of Agama. DeMbare, under the guidance of new technical director Aristică Cioabă, were clinical in front of goal and dominated proceedings, producing one of their most complete performances of the campaign. Agyemang
Frank led the charge with a brace, while Isaac Landu also got on the scoresheet. Abel Gwatidzo added further gloss to the result with a thunderous strike that will surely be among the contenders for Goal of the Month.
Highlanders, meanwhile, were left frustrated after being forced to settle for a share of the spoils against Simba Bhora,
Innocent Kurira reported from Barbourfields Stadium. Bosso battled hard in front of their home supporters but could not find the winning goal in a tightly contested 1-1 draw. Blessing Ndereki handed the visitors the lead in the 29th minute, but Highlanders responded positively and levelled matters a minute from halftime through an impressive long-range effort from Royn Nyamono, whose growing confidence and influence continue to shine through with every passing game.
Elsewhere, Manica Diamonds secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over ZPC Kariba in Mutare, while Herentals maintained their impressive run with a narrow 1-0 win over Triangle United.
The fireworks had, however, started on Saturday, when the opening fixtures of Matchday 21 produced their own share of drama. Bulawayo Chiefs edged MWOS 1-0 in a hard-fought contest, while Scottland underlined their title credentials with a commanding 3-0 victory over FC Hunters. TelOne and FC Platinum cancelled each other out in a goalless stalemate, but there was no shortage of excitement at Baobab Stadium where Ngezi Platinum Stars and
Chicken Inn served up a five-goal thriller. The hosts eventually emerged 3-2 winners in a match that set the tone for a weekend in which goals flowed freely across the country’s football grounds.
