SPONSORSHIP for the fourth edition of the Godlwayo South Soccer League (GSSL) has been upped for this season with bankrollers of the competition to announce the package soon.
GSSL board chairman, Bhekimpilo Maranda Sithole said the increase in the sponsorship was meant to bring about competitiveness into the league.
Last year, winners of the 13-team league, Mbembesi walked away with $450 and a trophy at a ceremony where Highlanders coach Madinda Ndlovu was the guest of honour at a ceremony held at Avoca Cultural Centre. Bulawayo-based businessman Sithole sponsors the GSSL together with the South Africa domiciled Kossam Mavuna Ndlovu and Zibusiso Majankwe Ncube with the trio calling themselves MMM.
“This year the sponsors MMM have increased the prize money and this gives the league more competition. We are still finalising with other stakeholders by next week the figure will be ready,’’ Sithole said.
Action got underway in the league last weekend with 12 of the teams in action. Singwambidzi Eagles are on top of the log after they thumped Vokola 5-1. Sithole feels that they are making improvements on a yearly basis with issues of crowd trouble having gone down since officials are now accepting match results and crowds at league matches have also improved.
“The league started last weekend, it’s like year after year we are improving. Incidents of crowd trouble are down now. Officials now accept the results and the attendance from communities has improved as some matches we see councillors in our matches like councillor for Ward Four and Ward Seven,’’ he said.
It promises to be yet another exciting season for the GSSL with this year’s sponsorship to bring even more joy to the community of Insiza South.
