THE Gokwe North Rural District Council is in the process of upgrading and reconstructing the Sanyati-Nembudziya road which was destroyed by heavy rains that affected the area in January this year. Shingirai Tigere, the RDC’s Chief Executive Officer, said the ongoing road project was now at an advanced stage. He said the RDC received $16,000 from the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) for the road project and they have so far covered about 63km.

“I can confirm that we received $16,000 from Zinara for the construction and upgrading of roads in our area. We are in the process of upgrading the Sanyati-Nembudziya road and the project is now at an advanced stage,” said Tigere.

He said the council chipped in with an additional $7,000 for the project. Tigere said the RDC was committed to the completion of the road project as a sound road infrastructure was key to the development of the area. The Gokwe North CEO bemoaned the lack of resources which he said was delaying the completion of the project.

“We are forced to do everything on our own as we cannot afford to engage contractors of repute,” said Tigere. Project manager Muchawu Mudukuti said the upgrading was going on well despite lack of road construction machinery.

“We do not have the necessary machinery for road construction such as tippers and excavators. We are using a single council tractor which is not that effective,” said Mudukuti
