adminZIMBABWEAN Nick Price will captain the internationals team at the Liberty National in New Jersey, which has been chosen to host the 2017 Presidents Cup, the PGA Tour has announced.
The 11th edition of the biennial matchplay tournament – which sees the United States take on an international team without Europeans – will take place in South Korea next year before it returns to American soil in 2017.
“We’ve had several very compelling announcements relative to the future of The Presidents Cup so far this summer,” said PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem.
“But standing in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty today to announce Liberty National as our next US-based host of the event is really icing on the cake.
“The Presidents Cup has come so far in its relatively short history, and seeing the world’s best players compete in this market, on this incredibly fantastic venue with such an amazing backdrop in 2017 is something fans of this great game will never forget.”
America has won all but two of the Presidents Cups held since the tournament’s debut in 1994, with an international win in Melbourne in 1998 and a draw in South Africa in 2003.
Fred Couples captained the USA to a 18.5-15.5 win in Ohio last year with Jay Haas taking over as skipper in 2015 and Price leading the international team for a second time.
“Being chosen by the PGA Tour to host the 2017 Presidents Cup is every golf course’s dream,” said Liberty National co-founder Paul Fireman.
“We at Liberty National Golf Club are proud to receive this honour and will dedicate our efforts to live up to both the Tour and the players’ expectations.”
The Presidents Cup announcement came as the PGA Tour unveiled a 25-year agreement with Liberty National, which hosted The Barclays in 2009 and 2013. – Sports Reporter/Sporting Life
