GONYE ELECTED ANOCA ZONE VI

ZIMBABWE Olympic Committee president Thabani Gonye is looking forward to his new role at the ANOCA Zone VI following his election as the vice-president of the regional body.

ANOCA Zone VI held their elective general assembly over the weekend in Malawi where a new leadership was voted into office and will be in charge for the next four years.

“For me, it’s an opportunity, one to serve in sport and also growth in the sport, and the recognition that you receive from your peers who are leading national Olympic Committees in the region.

“I think it is an honour really to be recognised by peers to serve in this role,” said Gonye.

ANOCA Zone VI is made up of Southern Africa countries – Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The regional body plays an important role in promoting and coordinating Olympic activities.

“In terms of the responsibilities of ANOCA, is to look at all sport issues and related issues in the region that really support the structure of athletes and all issues that espouse the Olympic values.

“My responsibilities would be to ensure we provide leadership to the board that really looks at the 10 countries in the region.

“And then also to look at the athlete issues in terms of development.

“In all these areas, sharing and collaborating in the region, and coordinating in the region where we can find strategic alliances in the region for the betterment of our sport and for the betterment of opportunities for our athletes.”

Gonye said athletes remain at the heart of everything they do.
