Good manners matter as schools reopen

As schools reopen this term, learners are being reminded that education is not only about passing examinations, but also about developing good character, discipline, and respect for others.

A school becomes a better place when students practice good manners, proper hygiene, and responsible behaviour every day.

Good habits help create a peaceful learning environment where everyone feels safe, respected, and comfortable.

One of the major concerns in schools and public places today is littering. Some students throw papers, food wrappers, and plastics everywhere without caring about the environment. Others even throw litter through car windows while travelling.

Such behaviour makes the surroundings dirty and unhealthy. Learners should always use rubbish bins and participate in keeping classrooms, playgrounds, buses, and school grounds clean.

A clean environment prevents diseases and creates a pleasant atmosphere for learning.

Students should also avoid spitting everywhere. Spitting in public places spreads germs and diseases and shows a lack of respect for other people.

Good hygiene starts with small habits such as using tissues, covering the mouth properly, and keeping shared spaces clean.

Schools should be places where cleanliness is promoted at all times.

Good table manners are equally important. Learners should avoid making funny or loud noises when drinking tea or eating food.

Talking while food is in the mouth is also bad manners because it is unpleasant and disrespectful to people nearby. Proper eating habits show self-control, maturity, and respect.

Students should learn to eat quietly and politely, especially during break time and at school functions.

Another important area is toilet hygiene. Learners must always flush toilets properly, keep toilets clean, and wash their hands thoroughly after using the restroom.

Boys are encouraged to use toilets responsibly and carefully to avoid making the toilets dirty for others.

Poor hygiene in toilets can lead to the spread of diseases and unpleasant smells that affect everyone at school. Clean toilets reflect responsible and disciplined students.

In this digital age, students must also practice good phone etiquette. Some people put their phones on loudspeaker mode in public while talking, disturbing everyone around them.

Others play loud music or videos in buses, classrooms, or waiting areas without considering others. Respectful students know when to lower their voices and use earphones where necessary.

Being considerate of other people’s peace and privacy is a sign of maturity and good upbringing.

Respect for others should also be seen in the way students speak and behave. Learners should greet teachers, visitors, workers, and fellow students politely.

They should avoid rude language, shouting unnecessarily, or laughing at others. Kind words and respectful communication help build strong relationships within the school community.

Parents and teachers have an important role in teaching children good manners from an early age. However, students themselves must make the decision to practice discipline even when no one is watching.

Character is built through daily habits, and small actions can make a big difference in society.

As we begin this new school term, let every learner remember that good manners cost nothing, yet they open doors to respect, success, and positive relationships.

A disciplined student is admired everywhere, at school, at home, and in the community. Let us all work together to make our schools clean, respectful, healthy, and enjoyable places for everyone.
