VICE President Chiwenga has expressed satisfaction at the refurbishment progress at Dorowa Minerals Limited in Buhera, describing it as “light at the end of the tunnel.”
He said during his last visit to the plant in 2021, nothing significant was happening on the ground.
“I think we are now on the right track. During my last visit here (2021) nothing was moving except the magnetite production. That was the only meaningful operation that was being done here. I have gone into the grease plant, and now you can see life. They have installed new equipment that will select and discard big rocks which were causing problems on the conveyor belt.
“Now they can take the rightful material to the plant. The plant itself is now operational, with new equipment fitted throughout. New pumps have been installed, and the plant should operate 24/7, only shutting down for annual maintenance,” said VP Chiwenga.
Dorowa Minerals is a strategic asset in the mining sector, boasting significant phosphate reserves crucial for fertiliser production, a key ingredient for boosting agricultural productivity and supporting local economic growth.
VP Chiwenga’s visit underscores the Government’s focus on strengthening key sectors to support the country’s economic transformation and Vision 2030 objectives.
Government, through Mutapa Investment Fund, injected US$5,3 million into reviving Dorowa Mine last year, aiming to increase local fertiliser production and reduce reliance on imports.
The mine is expected to produce 150 000 tonnes of phosphate concentrate annually, meeting over 50 percent of the country’s basal fertiliser demand.
VP Chiwenga and his delegation, including the Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza, proceeded to Sabi Star Mine, also in Buhera North Constituency.
