The six-member Health Service Board (HSB) has vowed to improve conditions in public health institutions and the welfare of workers in the health sector. The new HSB board was appointed in June.
HSB vice board chairperson Professor Auxilia Munodawafa said the board has started working on a salary scale to standardise the payment of health workers.
“As a new board we have hit the ground running, the whole idea is to be proactive so that we do not have strikes by nurses and doctors. As a board we have started visiting institutions meeting with the workers, board and care recipients, establishing issues that are at hand so that we can address those in our strategies.
“We have seen that some people are getting allowances and some are not, and it is causing a lot of distortions. We are looking at policies that have worked in other countries and we plan to adapt and adopt them into our system so that we have a motivated workforce.”
