GABORONE United defender Tatenda Gora says he is ready to carry the same form that made him one of the FNB Premiership’s stand-out performers last season into a new campaign filled with fresh challenges.

The Zimbabwean centre back was honoured at last season’s FNB Premiership Awards after helping United to the championship title, and he believes the team’s unbeaten start this year has set the right tone for another successful run.

United have collected seven points from their opening three matches, winning two and drawing one. On Saturday they host Police XI, a side still searching for their first victory of the season.

“The strong start provides a crucial foundation for our title defence aspirations. It’s still very early but that is just a starting point,” said Gora.

“As we resume matches from the international break, we want to give our best in the next game. I have been working extra on my fitness and endurance to get myself ready. Police XI can cause problems at any time, so we need maximum focus and confidence.”

Beyond the league, Gaborone will launch their Caf Champions League campaign next week against Tanzanian giants Simba SC. Gora, who could make his debut in the tournament, sees it as a personal and collective milestone.

“We want to keep the momentum and build on it ahead of the Champions League,” he said.

“It’s a new challenge, and I’m bracing for it. I see it as an opportunity to unlock a new level for my career.

But the bigger call is on me to give my coaches value and fight for my place in the team.

Last season I was consistent and that’s what I want to keep doing.”

The 25-year-old also praised United’s supporters for their unwavering belief.

“It’s amazing how they trust in my abilities against all the odds.

They are the motivation that pushes me to help the team improve and achieve our targets,” said Gora.
