However, 21-year-old Miss Bulawayo 2011, Nadia Gori, is out to prove that she actually has both — beauty and brains.
The talented stunner, who recently handed over the coveted crown to bubbly Bongani Dhlakama, plans to study law and continue with the charity work she has been doing.
Gori returned home from Malaysia where she finished in the top five of the Miss Tourism International talent category last week.
In an interview with Saturday Leisure, the pencil-slim model said besides continuing with modelling which she has taken part in for the past 14 years, she wanted to study hard and be a lawyer.
“Besides modelling which I will continue doing I would like to go back to school and study law or be a businesswoman in the city,” she said.
Gori, who is also the reigning Miss Talent 2011, showed the world that she is not only beautiful but talented as she displayed her prowess with her feet at the just-ended pageant.
She took to the stage clad in yellow attire and enthralled the audience with a Ndebele traditional dance to Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s hit track Africa.
It is the traditional dance that also earned her the title Miss Talent in the Miss Tourism Zimbabwe beauty pageant early last year.
The soft-spoken model said she loves dancing and was not ashamed as the only black contestant to showcase her traditional dance.
“I love dancing very much and as I was on the stage most people were staring at me in amusement but I just took it lightly and acted as if I am dancing for Zimbabweans,” she said.
The model, who has been taking part in modelling contests since she was six, said she was doing it for her country.
“That is one of our dances here in Zimbabwe and I was doing it for my country,” said Gori.
She has done charity work in the country, and was set to continue with the reconstruction of the classroom block at Thomas Rudland Primary School.
Government condemned the school, a former barrack during the liberation war, a few years ago as the structures were posing a threat to the pupils. As Miss Bulawayo, Gori decided to take it upon herself to construct one of the classroom blocks at the school.
As a former pupil at the school, she held a charity ball to raise funds and buy materials for the project.
“I am proud of my achievements and I am happy to say that the charity ball was fruitful as I managed to get materials and demolition labour for the exercise. Unfortunately I had to leave for the Miss Tourism
International pageant but in a few weeks’ time I will take it up again,” said Gori.
She stayed in Malaysia for close to a month and had a wonderful experience in the Asian country.
“I had a wonderful time in Malaysia as I got the chance to visit a number of tourist attractions during the three weeks that I was in that country. I had the opportunity to attend the Sultan Prince’s birthday at the Sultan’s King Palace,” she said.
Said Gori:
“I am inspired by Queen Rania of Jordan because she is beautiful, graceful and elegant. She is a true meaning of a woman.”
The year 2011 was a great year for Zimbabwean models as they proved their worth on the ramp.
Miss Zimbabwe Malaika Mashandu set a standard for her colleagues by finishing in the top 15 of the Miss World Pageant held in October last year.
