Goshawks take aim at SWD Eagles in Currie Cup

BOUYED by their new-found purple patch, Zimbabwe’s Goshawks have vowed to keep improving and create a culture of winning at the ongoing Currie Cup First Division rugby tournament in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Goshawks take on SWD Eagles on Friday (kick-off 4pm).

Their team manager Jason Maritz is bullish they will continue winning.

Although he believes the squad is still some way to being a genuine article, he noted that winning always had a positive impact on preparations for the Rugby Africa Cup in France from July 1 to July 10.

This year’s Rugby Africa is also serving as the final World Cup qualifier, with the winner securing an automatic ticket to the global showcase, while the runners-up would have to battle it out in a Repechage against other runners-up from other World Rugby zones.

“Of course winning is impactful when it becomes a habit … For us to win three games now in the Currie Cup is a nice box ticked,” Maritz said.

“But, at the end of the day, every game we play is another building block towards the big picture.

“We don’t believe we have peaked, we don’t believe we have put together the perfect game yet and at stages we have shown glimpses of what we can do, so we obviously continue building.”

He also spoke about the need for the Goshawks to work on perfecting their defensive lines and on set-pieces.

We are far from being the finished product but we are working hard on it.

“And just know that no stone is being left unturned as we prepare for France.”
