Gospel diva fights dependency syndrome

GOSPEL musician, Olivia “Mukadzi Akangwara” Manyamba, has urged women to fight the dependency syndrome and work for themselves to avoid being abused.

The diva, who grew up singing at home and church, feels women have been taken for granted.

She said there was need to fight the perception that women cannot do without their male counterparts.

Having started singing in 1999, Manyamba finally got into the studio in 2019.

“Things were difficult for me since I needed to take care of the children.

“So, I went to South Africa in 2011, where I settled.

“I released the album, Mukadzi Akangwara, which is more based on my story since my journey has not been easy.

“I used to sell vegetables in different locations.

“I want to encourage every woman to work for their families, like what is said in Proverbs 31,” she said.

“Women should learn to work hard than to depend on someone.

“We need to fight the dependency syndrome since women have been at the mercy of men.

“On my album, I have songs like Mukadzi Akangwara, Muzita raJesu, Ndinonewo, Ikoko Jehovha, A Living Testimony.

“I also released three singles, including Minamato Yevana veZimbabwe and Chitsidzo, ,” she said.

Olivia said challenges are part of the industry.

“The challenges have been about marketing and approaching male producers and it’s a dilemma since, at times, they can make you feel uncomfortable by asking your marital status.

“I always put my country in my music as part of the prayer.

“God answers our prayers and music reaches every part of the world.

“Zimbabwe needs our prayers.”
