Looking at today’s gospel artistes reveals how the idea of God’s existence and how his love flows continually from his throne in heaven to his subjects here on earth, makes up a recurring theme in most gospel songs.
One could consider artistes like Apostle Toggy Chivaviro who on one of his albums had the song “What a friend”, Karon Mutungwazi “Only God”, Masowe Echishanu “Yeso Ari kushevedza”, “Zvipo ZvaJehova “Jesu WeNazaretha” and many other artistes whose songs underline the idea that God exists in heaven.
Having established this and the fact that God is continually present in our everyday lives, should leave the average human to take stock of his or her life and make a point to live their lives according to the word of God.
It is upon this point that Christian music plays an important role in any given society as it reminds people to adopt Christian principles of right living and good neighbourliness in order to encourage peaceful relations among people.
By being a product of artistic creativity and shaped by an artiste’s experience in the Christian faith, Christian music teaches the word of God and by so doing addresses social, economic and spiritual problems affecting people in society.
That then explains why we have songs which are motivational such as the one by Agatha Murudzwa titled “Press on” which encourages perseverance in pursuit of one’s goals in life and the song “favour” by Mathias Mhere which talks about how material prosperity is not gained by human efforts but from God. Other artistes include Mai Olivia Charamba who on one of her albums has the song “Hakuna Chombo” which talks about how witchcraft cannot be used to destroy God-fearing people and Firm Faith’s “Misodzi” which talks about how mourning and loss of loved ones are a reality of life because of sin.
What makes Christian music such a huge part of our daily lives, however, is the fact that it inspires belief and trust in God and at the same time inculcating a culture of praise and worship among believers.
Such a culture is necessary as it prepares people for the soon coming of Christ and also readies them to resist influences of evil in their daily lives.
These days, with cases of Satanism now reported on an almost daily basis in the media together with other social ills such as ritual murders, abuse and rape of children, women and even men, Christian music tends to inspire hope in people and also encourages them to continue trusting in God.
While questions around why Christian music should be sold for profit can be asked by many, there is no doubt that such music will continue to gain relevance in our lives especially as society continues to show tendencies towards evil and people are more preoccupied with amassing wealth by whatever means instead of seeking to gain favour from God. Hence for this reason Christian music should be in every house-hold and people should take time to digest its messages in order to be more responsive to the word of God.
Artistes on the other hand should also take time to study trends of wrong-doing in our society and come up with songs that are inspired of God’s spirit and relevant or responsive to the problems affecting people in their daily lives.
