GOVERNMENT has extended a helping hand to Daisy Dube Children’s Home in Chipinge which was recently gutted by fire, by donating an assortment of goods to assist the affected children.

The donation was officially handed over yesterday by the Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza, during a visit to the home at Mt Selinda in Chipinge East.

The children’s home, which is run by the United Church of Christ in Zimbabwe (UCCZ), was destroyed by fire on Monday, leaving children without shelter and essential supplies.

Speaking at the event, Advocate Mugadza said the province is increasingly grappling with fire-related incidents, and emphasized the need to raise awareness to prevent future disasters.

“As Government, we could not ignore the plight of the children following the tragic incident. This intervention is a gesture to support them and ensure their welfare is restored as quickly as possible. The Government and its stakeholders will continue mobilising resources to rebuild the institution — even better than before,” said Minister Mugadza.

Representing the Chipinge District Development Co-ordinator, Chipinge Rural District Council Chief Executive Officer, Mr Blessings Mamvosha commended Government and stakeholders for stepping in, saying the donation would go a long way in supporting efforts by the district’s Civil Protection Committee to ease the burden being faced by the children’s home.

“We applaud the swift response by Government, which shows its commitment to protecting vulnerable members of our society. Efforts are ongoing to fully assess the extent of the damage and mobilise further resources to rebuild the home,” said Mr Mamvosha.

UCCZ Eastern Region Superintendent, Reverend Godfrey Dundu said: “The Daisy Dube Children’s Home is home to 23 children. The children lost all their belongings in the fire. We are appealing to the corporate world to assist us in rebuilding this institution, which has been caring for abandoned children since the 1950s.”
