THE Government is firmly committed to establishing a transparent, efficient, and citizen-responsive public procurement system, Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has said.

Officially opening the Fifth General Assembly of the African Public Procurement Network (APPN) here in Victoria Falls on Wednesday, VP Chiwenga said political will was the undeniable force transforming policies into impactful action.

“Here in Zimbabwe, public procurement accounts for a significant portion of our Gross Domestic Product, approximately seventeen percent and serves as a crucial mechanism for delivering public services and driving economic growth,” he said.

He highlighted the establishment of the Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (PRAZ) as a testament to this commitment, saying the body not only regulates but actively promotes professionalism.

He emphasised that the professionalisation of procurement is essential for enhancing system integrity and effectiveness.

“We must ensure that procurement professionals are equipped with the knowledge, skills and ethical standards necessary to navigate the complexities of modern procurement,” he said.

A key pillar of this modernisation, he said, is the embrace of technology.

He said integrating digital solutions is no longer optional but critical.

“In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, integrating digital technologies, e-procurement systems, and sophisticated data analytics is no longer optional it is absolutely essential

“These innovations enhance transparency, significantly reduce inefficiencies, and actively mitigate corruption,” he said.

Aligning with continental goals, the VP Chiwenga urged delegates to ensure their procurement strategies reflect the aspirations of Africa’s Agenda 2063 and leverage opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area.

He acknowledged challenges such as corruption and inefficiency but affirmed that through robust regulation, professional capacity building, and technology, these can be overcome.
