THE Government has stepped up efforts to facilitate the safe and dignified return of Zimbabwean nationals from South Africa, mobilising resources and partnering with humanitarian organisations, development partners, churches, non-governmental organisations and the private sector to support the repatriation exercise.
In a statement, the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, through the Department of Civil Protection (DCP), said coordinated interventions are already underway following recent developments in South Africa that have left a number of Zimbabwean nationals stranded and seeking assistance to return home.
The Ministry said the repatriation programme is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, with the primary objective of ensuring the safe transportation and reintegration of affected citizens.
“Assistance being mobilised includes food provisions, temporary shelter and transportation from South Africa to designated reception centres in Zimbabwe,” said the Ministry.
Government is also utilising resources from the Emergency Fund to support the operation as part of broader humanitarian response efforts aimed at assisting vulnerable citizens.
According to the Ministry, more than five organisations have already pledged support towards the initiative, demonstrating solidarity with affected Zimbabweans and Government efforts to respond to the situation.
The Ministry expressed gratitude to stakeholders who have already committed resources and appealed for additional support from all sectors of society.
“The Ministry welcomes additional support from the private sector, humanitarian agencies, development partners, NGOs, church organisations and all well-wishers to strengthen ongoing repatriation efforts and many other Civil Protection activities aimed at safeguarding communities and supporting vulnerable populations,” reads part of the statement.
Government departments have since been activated at border entry points and within communities to receive, process and assist returnees as they reintegrate into society.
The Ministry said the situation requires a coordinated national response involving Government institutions, development partners, civil society organisations and individual citizens.
It reaffirmed Government’s commitment to ensuring that all affected Zimbabweans receive the necessary support and assistance upon their return.
The repatriation initiative comes as authorities seek to ensure that citizens affected by developments beyond the country’s borders are protected and assisted through timely humanitarian interventions and reintegration support programmes.
The Government also thanked organisations and individuals who continue to support national humanitarian interventions and emergency response efforts, saying their contribution remains critical in strengthening the country’s capacity to respond to emerging challenges.
