The Government says investigations into the accident that occurred along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway on February 14, in which 28 people have died, are continuing.

The accident, which involved a bus and a haulage truck, occurred at the 262-kilometre peg near the Lutumba tollgate in Beitbridge.

Recently, the Government suspended the operating licence of Urban Connect, whose bus collided head-on with the haulage truck.

This followed the discovery that the bus owner neither had valid passenger insurance nor a valid route permit, while the driver had not been retested as required.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona confirmed the developments in an interview today.

“Let me first say may the souls of those who passed on during that horrific accident rest in eternal peace,” he said.

“I think the issue of accidents now calls for a holistic approach. In that particular accident, the driver was very close to the tollgate. So why was he was speeding?

“And it also comes to issues to do with mental health, we need to interrogate that as well. A reasonable person would not have got into such a horrific accident at that particular place,” he said.
