Government fully backs smart policing initiatives to make law enforcement more effective and will continue to provide the necessary tools for the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s operations, Vice President Kembo Mohadi said last week.
The model uses artificial intelligence and other technologies to replace the need for so many visible police officers on the ground. In the next few months, the Government hopes to create a police force that is less visible on the streets and more effective at keeping the public safe by embracing AI, smart surveillance and other technologies.
Speaking at the commissioning of 450 Zimbabwe Republic Police vehicles Government bought to boost the police fleet and enhance operations, VP Mohadi said policing, especially in modern times, required an array of resources beyond vehicles.
“I wish therefore to express the Government’s commitment to provide the necessary tools for your operations. In the same vein, all of us must understand that a safe, secure and orderly society depends not only on the conduct of police, but on the actions of citizens, and many other stakeholders.
“Indeed, such partnerships are the cornerstone of a better and prosperous Zimbabwe. In this regard, smart policing must become a reality sooner rather than later so that the police can match the criminal sophistry which has become commonplace the world over.
“The fact that you have made technology a key pedestal in the fight against crime through the ZRP Strategic Plan: Horizon 2025, speaks volumes of the extent you are geared to modernise your operations.”
Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe said the brick-by-brick approach would culminate in a well-resourced police service that would amplify public confidence and ensure public safety.
“It is for this and many other reasons that the people of Zimbabwe remain indebted to the Government’s stance and leadership that demonstrated time and again through ensuring that the people of Zimbabwe get the much deserved efficient public services.
“I am privileged to highlight that beyond this batch of vehicles we are witnessing today, the fact that your Government is also in the process of availing cutting-edge technologies to the police bears testimony to this assertion,” he said.
