THE Government last week handed over housing units that it constructed for Bulilima flood victims after their homes were ravaged by Cyclone Dineo induced rains last year.
The Government released $45 000 for the construction of houses for the 12 most affected families in Bambadzi and Huwana wards. The construction of two-bedroomed houses for the flood victims was part of the Government through Bulilima District Civil Protection Unit’s 100-day plan programme.
Villagers located close to main rivers in Bulilima District namely Manzamnyama, Thekwane and Maitengwe rivers were left homeless after their homes were swept away due to flooding early last year. Bulilima West legislator Retired Major Lungisani Nleya confirmed the new development.
“Yes, I have been told about that. It’s unfortunate I will go to the ground next week after my return from Harare. However, it’s good news to hear that the flood victims have finally occupied their new houses,” said Rtd Maj Nleya.
Nine houses were built in Huwana and three in Bambadzi. The situation was severe that Zimbabweans working in South Africa had to donate groceries to villagers from Huwana Ward who lost their property to the floods.
Families received blankets, kitchen utensils, stationery and food stuffs from the Huwana Foundation resident in South Africa.
The foundation also donated groceries to 54 disadvantaged community members from the same ward.
Last year floods destroyed a lot of property in Matabeleland South with people being marooned in Gwanda and several dams being washed away.
Two months ago more than 20 homes and a school were severely damaged by hailstorms, which pounded Umguza District, leaving some villagers homeless.
The Civil Protection Unit was on high alert for any disasters including floods this rainy season and Government has since released $1,2 million for any eventualities. @richardmuponde
