adminHealth and Child Welfare Minister Henry Madzorera told Senate last week that allowing donors to fund the country’s HIV and Aids programme was tantamount to opening up to an outsider one’s private life.
The minister was responding to a question from Mount Darwin Senator Alice Chimbudzi (Zanu-PF) whether the ministry had the capacity to fund anti-retroviral programmes considering that some donors would soon withdraw their funding.
Minister Madzorera gave a breakdown of funding sources of the ARV programme where he said Government was only contributing 27 percent of the funding, a situation he said was not tenable.
“So, we need to now start generating our domestic financing mechanisms to take care of the most basic essentials like treatment and antiretroviral therapy for ourselves,” he said.
Minister Madzorera said Zimbabwe had slightly over 400 000 clients on ARV in the public sector while the need for this year stood at 560 000, owing to funding challenges.
