THE GOVERNMENT has ordered a thorough investigation into the Dominican Convent High School following the expulsion of eight girls for drug abuse.
Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution permanent secretary, Tafadzwa Muguti, said the school head is required to surrender evidence to the police.
“Harare Province is facing the largest drugs crisis we have ever witnessed. Drug lords are targeting our bright young boys and girls in our schools.
“Unfortunately some private schools are being arrogant and not reporting these cases to the police. This includes holding internal disciplinary hearings on clearly criminal matters which require police investigation and arrest of offenders,” he said.
Muguti said his office had directed thorough investigations into the Dominican Convent drugs, including finding the source of the drugs.
“School Heads are required to report any criminal offences to the police which includes surrender of evidence in this case the actual drugs.
“Non-cooperation may result in obstruction of justice and that has serious consequences and we can never tolerate ignorance to such cases.”
He said his office would be engaging all ministries, departments and agencies to collectively address the drugs scourge.
“Let me assure all residents in the province that we will win this war against drugs,” Muguti said.
