GOVERNMENT has secured funding for Mnene Mission Hospital in Mberengwa to assist the institution to mitigate its water crisis which has left health workers and patients stranded.
Midlands provincial medical director, Dr Milton Chemhuru said the ministry had secured US$13 000 for the hospital to repair the vandalised water pipes and filtration tanks to enable the institution to draw water from Diringindi Dam which is the alternative water source.
“Mnene Hospital used to draw water from Mnene Dam but the hospital’s ultra-violet water treatment plant failed to cope with muddy water being pumped from the dam.
“This was due to the incessant rains received this year. The institution identified an alternative water source and required US$13 000 to repair vandalised water pipes as well as the filtration tanks,” said Dr Chemhuru.
Mnene Hospital, which is Mberengwa’s biggest referral hospital servicing 35 clinics and four rural hospitals, was using raw water from Mnene Dam, a situation which was likely to trigger serious health challenges and subsequent closure of the institution.
Mnene medical superintendent, Dr Nyasha Makura said the water crisis was now compromising the health service delivery at the institution.
He said this dire situation was being worsened by shortages of water purification chemicals.
