“When I got into office in 2010, these charges were high and we reduced them for the first time,” Minister Goche said.
He said rewarding those in civil service motivated them to work even harder and improve service delivery.
“We acknowledge the achievements made by Government workers at the end of the public service pendulum.
“The CVR department is a strategic and sensitive arm of the ministry since it deals with sensitive documents and services.
“Staff at CVR managed to cut back the backlog period for original licences from four years to eight months.
“There was a backlog of licences of over 82 000 at the beginning of the year and these are nearly finished,” he said.
Minister Goche urged all employees in the civil service to shun malpractice and corruption.
“Fraud is costly in terms of damaged reputation of the ministry and the Government which leads to loss of public trust.
“I have a heap of anonymous letters in my office of complaints about corruption at the CVR offices. We deployed teams to investigate allegations of corruption but some of the cases have been found to be untrue, but we will continue to get to the root of the matter,” Mininister Goche said.
In a speech read on his behalf, Health Advisor in the Office of the President and Cabinet Dr Timothy Stamps said the Transport Ministry should introduce measures that reduce road carnage.
“The ministry should introduce new systems where experienced drivers should have a special licence with newly qualified drivers having a different one. That enables better driving behaviour and make our roads safer,” he said.
Six CVR department employees were rewarded.
Calvin Chavi emerged as the best employee for 2010 while Gertrude Nyandoro was the 2011 winner.
