ZIMBABWE’S quest to rejoin the Commonwealth is firmly on track, with the Government expressing satisfaction over a recent positive review that bolsters its chances of returning to the 56-member club.
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Professor Amon Murwira confirmed that the Second Republic remained optimistic and was actively pursuing the readmission process as a key component of its engagement and re-engagement policy.
Speaking on Star FM’s Muriro current affairs programme on Monday, Minister Murwira stated that the positive review outcomes have strengthened Zimbabwe’s case.
“Zimbabwe undertook a review, the review which came out very positively,” he said. “We are awaiting the meeting of Barbuda, which will be held in November this year.
“We are still positive. We don’t quickly drop the ball, but at the same time, we prioritise issues. That issue is still on our radar and we are positive about their prospective outcomes.”
He added that the Government is now looking forward to the next major Commonwealth milestone, with eyes set on the meeting to be held in Antigua and Barbuda this November.
The move to rejoin the group follows Zimbabwe’s withdrawal in 2003. Since the inception of the Second Republic in 2018, the Government has made significant strides in aligning its laws and policies with international standards, a key requirement for readmission.
The readmission is expected to unlock various opportunities for the country in areas of trade, education, and technical cooperation, further integrating Zimbabwe into the global community of nations.
