A GRADE 1 teacher has been arrested for physically assaulting a six-year-old learner.

Audrey Bayana, of St Martin’s Convent Primary School, was accused of using a blackboard ruler to beat the child for stuttering and failing to answer questions during a lesson.

The student sustained injuries to his right eye.

Bayana and her headmistress attempted to reason with the parent, after she took the matter to the police.

Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, could not be reached for comment.

However, H-Metro is reliably informed that the case was reported at Braeside Police Station, under RRB 5695394.

Sources said the child refused to go to school following the assault.

This exposed the case.

“The teacher engaged the parent and offered to meet medical costs, but never did.

“The parent took the matter to the headmistress and to the district office.

“The parent followed up with the investigating officer leading to the arrest,” said the source.

Bayana is expected to appear in court today.
