A 79-YEAR-OLD man yesterday appeared in court for the alleged rape and murder of his granddaughter.

Alois Shamu from Chinhamhora was not asked to plead.

He appeared before Harare magistrate, Dennis Mangosi, who remanded him to November 3, for indictment.

He has been advised to approach the High Court for bail application.

The State says on October 10, at around 11:30pm, Shamu sneaked into the bedroom where the 11-year-old girl was sleeping with a female employee.

It is alleged that the deceased screamed for help.

Her screams woke up another woman, who spotted the accused.

In the morning, the female worker narrated the matter to her mother.

The court heard that the grandfather then reported the sudden death of his granddaughter as a way of concealing the crime.

The police attended the scene and discovered blood stains on the deceased’s genitalia.

The girl’s body was then taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for a post mortem.

The results showed that she was raped and then strangled to death.

Zinhiva Essel appeared for the State.
