Grandpa attempts to kill lover’s husband

 Lovemore Kadzura Rusape Correspondent —
A CHEEKY Nyanga grandfather (70) who attempted to kill the husband of his girlfriend by striking him with an axe and stones was last week imprisoned three years for the offence.

Patrick Mutsamwira of Mukurakudya Village under Chief Saunyama’s area will, however, have his advanced age and frailness to thank after Rusape regional magistrate, Mr Livingstone Chipadza, wholly suspended the sentence on condition of good behaviour.

Mutsamwira who was not legally represented and was denying ever attempting to kill Andrew Nyamahwai told the court that he was only defending himself from Nyamahwai who had attacked him.

Rusape District Prosecutor, Mr Tirivanhu Mutyasira, told the court that Mutsamwira stoned and struck Nyamahwai several times with an axe on the head and on the ribs after a misunderstanding over his relationship with his wife.

Testifying in court, Nyamahwai said he once caught Mutsamwira being intimate with his wife and on another different occasion he saw Mutsamwira kissing his wife and later gave her some money.

“Sometime in June 2016, Mutsamwira was caught red handed by Andrew Nyamahwai while kissing his wife. Mutsamwira was also seen giving Nyamahwai’s wife some money on the same day.

“This prompted the complainant to lodge a civil case before Headman Ganje who referred the parties to Chief Saunyama’s court after failing to solve it. On July 22, 2016 at around 4.30pm and at Mutukumira Village, Mutsamwira proceeded to Nyamahwai’s garden where he was watering his crops.

“Upon arrival, Mutsamwira threw stones and hit Nyamahwai on the ribs twice. He attacked him when he attempted to escape from his garden. Mutsamwira struck Nyamahwai on the right arm pit once with an axe and on top of the right eye and he fell down.

“He also struck the complainant using the same axe on the head.

“Nyamahwai was saved from further attack by a passerby, Prosper Mtetwa. Nyamahwai sustained some injuries,” said Mr Mutyasira.
