CHITUNGWIZA was lit for all the wrong reasons when a 52-year-old granny, Florence Chiremba, was busted allegedly running a serious weed empire from her humble home.
Detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics swooped on her house in Unit J on Tuesday, finding a mountain of mbanje weighing 31 kilogrammes.
“On 02/ 09 /25, detectives arrested Florence Chiremba at a house in Unit J, Chitungwiza for unlawful possession of 31kg of dagga,” confirmed national police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi in a statement.
What has set tongues wagging is how the granny’s surname, Chiremba, means “doctor” in Shona, while she was allegedly dishing out a different kind of “prescription” to the streets.
The soft-spoken woman, known in the community as Amai Flo, was seen as a harmless granny who attended church regularly. Neighbours are still reeling from the shock.
Neighbours told B-Metro they were shocked that the soft-spoken granny, was allegedly the go-to plug for weed in the area.
“She looked like someone who would rather be knitting sweaters than counting cash from weed sales. We are all in shock,” said a neighbour.
Zimbabwe is grappling with a drug crisis as substances like crystal meth, cough syrup and marijuana wreak havoc among youths. Police have intensified raids under an ongoing nationwide crackdown.
However, Florence’s case has added a bizarre twist to the fight.
Many expected big-time dealers to be flashy young men in fancy cars, not grandmothers with head scarves and a Bible on the coffee table.
Police urged the public to report drug peddlers in their communities.
“Drugs are destroying our youths. We need everyone to play a role in fighting this scourge,” read the statement.
Florence awaits her day in court, far away from her alleged weed stash.
