GRAVEL GIANT GOES BELLY-UP! Truck shuts down road in accident

Milton Mashasha in Matabeleland South

Motorists travelling along the Gwanda-Manama Road are struggling to get through after a gravel-laden truck overturned and blocked the road near Timber Farm early this morning.

The giant truck overturned and spilled tonnes of gravel across the road, leaving drivers stranded and forcing some vehicles to squeeze through the scene with great difficulty.

The cause of the accident remains a mystery, while the condition of the truck driver and any passengers is still unknown.

An Inter Africa bus crew travelling from Manama to Harare witnessed the chaos and described a nightmare journey through the accident scene.

Inter Africa driver Senzile Siziba said the road was virtually impassable when they arrived.

“The road is completely blocked. We had to struggle to pass. Motorists must either find alternative routes or be patient. We found the truck there early this morning, but we do not know what caused the accident,” said Siziba.

The bus conductor, Tapiwa Mushati, echoed the same concerns.

“We manoeuvred with great difficulty to get past the accident scene. It was not easy at all,” he said.

The overturned truck created a major headache for motorists using the busy route, with traffic slowing to a crawl as drivers searched for safe ways around the gravel-covered roadway.

The road is leads to places that include Ntepe, Manama, Hwali, Buvuma, Shashe, Kafusi, Mlambapheli border via Manama, Garanyemba, Bengo, Guyu Police, Bethel, Guyu Youth training centre and Manama General Hospital.

Authorities had not yet cleared the wreckage at the time of writing, raising fears of further delays for travellers heading in either direction.

Motorists are being urged to approach the area with extreme caution, watch out for congestion and follow any instructions from traffic officials on the ground.
