MORGAN ROGERS has become the most expensive British player ever after completing a transfer to Chelsea.
The England international has signed for the Blues from Aston Villa for £117million.
Rogers, 23, has signed a six-year deal at Stamford Bridge with the option of a further year.
He said: “I’m so excited. For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid.
“I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.”
The deal eclipses the £116m paid by Manchester City to land fellow England World Cup star Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest earlier in the window.
Sandro Tonali‘s transfer to Tottenham from Newcastle also means it is the third deal of the summer to reach nine figures, while the window has only just hit the halfway mark.
Likewise, it breaks the £115m Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo from Brighton in 2023.
Rogers is also now the second most expensive Premier League deal of all time, with only Alexander Isak‘s £130m move to Liverpool from Newcastle last summer trumping it.
He had his medical on Monday following the Three Lions’ third-place play-off against France.
Rogers played the full 90 minutes of that clash as Thomas Tuchel‘s side won 6-4, making it his seventh appearance at the World Cup while registering two assists.
The attacking midfielder scored 14 goals and added 12 assists in all competitions last season under Unai Emery.
No Chelsea player registered more assists last season, while only Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandez scored more than Rogers.
Rogers’ former club, Middlesbrough, will earn approximately £20m from the deal due to a clause meaning they will get 20 per cent of any profit Villa get from a sale.
Villa, who also sold Youri Tielemans to Manchester United earlier this month, signed Rogers from Boro for £15m.
The club released a statement to thank Rogers following his departure.
It read: “Aston Villa can confirm that Morgan Rogers has completed a permanent transfer to Chelsea.
“Since joining from Middlesbrough in 2024, the midfielder has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence, helping Villa to lift the UEFA Europa League last term, scoring the third goal in the final in Istanbul.
“During his time at the club, he also earned his first senior England caps, representing his country at the FIFA World Cup 2026, where the Three Lions finished third.
“A player with impeccable behaviour and commitment, Morgan leaves Aston Villa with the best wishes of everyone at the football club for both his service to the club and for his future career.
“He will always remain a core part of our recent great moments and memories.”
Chelsea have shifted their transfer approach following the appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager.
The club finished 10th in the league last season, and are now taking drastic action to improve their squad with proven talent.
With Rogers having joined Chelsea from Villa, Alejandro Garnacho could be heading the other way.
