BUILDING of a modern visitors’ centre at Great Zimbabwe Monument World Heritage Site is nearing completion in a development that is set to transform the complexion of the historic tourist attraction site.
The visitors’ centre is due for completion before the end of this year and is an integral part of the €3 million Great Zimbabwe Development Project.
The Great Zim Development project was launched by President Mnangagwa in June 2022 and is being funded by the French Development Agency and its partners.
The project seeks to preserve and safeguard the Great Zimbabwe monument and enhance its status as a World Heritage Site to boost tourism.
United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), in collaboration with the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ), is implementing the project.
NMMZ Masvingo regional director Mr Lovemore Mandima said work on the visitors’ centre will be completed before the end of next month.
“The visitors’ centre will comprise a car park, reception area and other facilities such as restaurants,” said Mr Mandima..
“There will also be dry stone walls on either side of the road that leads into the monuments from the main entrance and this will be to give visitors a feel of what to expect inside the Great Zimbabwe World Heritage Site
Great Zimbabwe was declared a World Heritage Site in 1986 is renowned as the largest dry stone wall structure in Africa.
